Huck's Cafe need no further introduction. The private kitchen is afterall not so private anymore. When you have all the big name bloggers animously agreed that this is the place to be, you KNOW that this place just can't go wrong.
I've always dreamt the concept of private kitchen at my own sanctuary, for although i'm terrible with my cooking- each time i do cook, i love to watch the expression of my diners, and seek their smile of approval. And when they give their thumbs up, a tiny wink of satisfaction glows within me.
This must be what Mr. Huck (as i called him) who operates Huck's Cafe for a limited capacity of approximate 20 people must have felt when good comments were circulating among his friends when he cooks. A humble, sweet man at that, he decided to share his passion of cooking to the public. And for that we're glad. I'm just hoping that we're not stealing all daddy's time away from his 3 adorable kids as he does spend long hours preparing each dinner with tender loving care.
Operating within his comfortable private enclave, with a modest farmily kitchen, is where he cooks up all the down-to-earth, homey offerings. Do expect simple typical home-cook meals on the tables, such as roast chicken and lamb stew and as Julz puts it, the place smells like a typical american kitchen. Mr. Huck told us he gets his inspirations through cookbooks and has no prior experience ever in commercial kitchen! Well, Mr. Huck- DONT LIE. I find it hard to believe since most dishes served that night can rival many restaurant out there. =)
What makes my dinner experience even more enjoyable is having friends i've held close to over the years with me, friends which i have gradually grew fond of them. . Gaily laughters were heard, and funny comments were made. We felt right at home, literally speaking. Let's hope for stronger bonds in our friendships for many years to come.
I'm glad most of us manage to make it (probably because Julz organised it 2 months ago, haha... anxious much?) minus Robin, Dianna, Kwankit and Sandy. We missed you guys! =)
Oops, pardon me for the excessive camwhoring pictures. :) Back to more important things in hand! FOOD!
(T-B: Onion Soup, Pumpkin Soup)
I personally think the onion soup flairs better than the pumpkin soup. This could be because the pumpkin soup lacks creamy lusciousness and aroma. The onion soup, on the other hand is simple comford food.
Cottage Lamb Stew Pie is one of my favourite of the night. Heap with cheese and mashed, what's not to like about this sinfully satisfying stew, it helps that the lamb has a soft mushy texture without much gamey taste.
The Cordon Bleu was definitely an interesting one. The stuffed chicken breast with ham and cheese are often found in a deep-fried version, instead huck's opted for a healthier choice by baking it with apples. I was skeptical with that it may make this dish too sweet, but turns out pretty decent. A hint of fruityness in a tender rolled chicken.
Biscuit Pizza is probably the least memorable dish of the night. A combination of mango, pineapple, chilli, onion, tomato, roast chicken, and cheese may sound wondeful but what it lacks of is taste. Points given for the creativity though.
Grilled Salmon Garlic Asparagus Lime Rice is one of Julz favourite. Admittedly well executed with nice flaky texture and great mix of side dishes. Top with such volumptious sauce, and you've got a winner.
Huck's Famous Lemon Roast Chicken- Inspired by Jamie Oliver
Much raved about chicken and Huck's no. 1 seller. Baked to perfect brown. Was it overrated? No, definitely not. Enough said.
Wild Rocket Chilli Chicken Spaghetti
Ahhh spaghetti with an asian twist. It was cooked slightly softer than al dente and it's pretty spicy which perhaps is more suitable to the local taste bud. I don't know about you, but i'm about as local as it gets =)
Desserts:
You cannot NOT order dessert when you are at HUCKs, you do not know what you're missing out, REALLY.
Creme Brulee - which i claim SILVERSPOON version is better. I don't care what you say! hahaha.
But Huck version was a melt-in-your-mouth treat.
*but silverspoon's still better* wink*
Watch the fire, chef :)
Chocolate mudpie ice cream
*Recommended* Huckberry Ice cream
The dessert that tops the chart. Dancing with exuberance on the palate is the Huckberry Ice Cream.
It tasted every bit as sexy as Mr. Huck claims it to be! If anyone can have orgasmic reaction eating dessert, that would be me.
Filled with Raisins, Apricot, and Brownies with frozen ice cream.
Thank you Julz whom organizes this wonderful dinner gathering and May for threatening everyone to be on time. Our bill came up to RM75 per pax with 3 bottles of new world wine
Huck Cafe strongly recommend pre-booking at least 24 hrs prior. For their offering, please refer to their facebook
fan page and if you see a hunky guy with the torch threaten to blow off some steam- yup that will be him. :D
